In April 2009 my wife and I moved from South Africa to South Korea to work as English teachers at a franchise of private English schools (hagwons). To overcome the language barrier I daily drew illustrations on my classroom whiteboards to explain the meanings of certain words, concepts and customs. In October 2009 the head of our franchise offered me the opportunity to draw the pictures for an entire illustrated dictionary to be used by very young Korean learners. Two years have passed during which I have completed 2 illustrated dictionaries (one based on the vocabulary for an English theme approach and one based on the vocabulary for an English phonics approach) as well as a set of English phonics flash cards. The dictionaries were done with pen and color pencils and the original drawings were scanned and colored digitally for the flash cards.
These pictures, simple as they may be, had to be produced at quite a frantic pace and over the course of 26 months, roughly 2400 original pictures were produced. It has been an amazing journey for me and hope whoever's glancing through here, will enjoy them too.
